Self-Care Tips For New Mums

When we give birth, our priorities shift in a major way. The little baby we hold in our arms is our number one priority. When this happens, we tend to give all of our time, energy and love to this amazing new addition to our family…but we forget about caring for ourselves. We forget that in order to look after someone else, we need to look after ourselves first, even if it’s just a little bit of self-care here and there. This is especially important with babies that have trouble sleeping through the night. Their sleeplessness affects us just as much as it does them. Taking time out for ourselves is ok. Here are a few self-care tips for new mums that have certainly helped me in the past…

Get out of the house and into nature

Getting out of the house may seem impossible to begin with, but as you get a little more used to being a mum, you might find it therapeutic to get out of the house and go for a walk in the park or even just go and sit in the backyard for a bit.

Call a friend…just because

When we have a baby, we tend to fall behind on catch ups with friends. If you find yourself with a spare 15 minutes while baby is occupied, grab your phone and give your bestie a call. They’ll be more than happy to hear from you and will help lift your spirits like only a bestie can. If a call isn’t possible, a simple SMS to check in works just as well.

Leave the dishes for tomorrow

Yep. You heard me. Put that dishcloth down and do something you ENJOY doing instead. Leaving the dishes sit for just one more day won’t hurt. Make a cup of tea or read a chapter of your book instead. You deserve a break.

I realise that all of these self-care tips seem super easy to do for anyone who hasn’t experienced having a newborn baby to look after. For all the new mums out there who haven’t had time to shower, have a proper meal or get enough sleep, let alone a nap – these few things are a good starting point to getting yourself back on track and feeling a little more in control of your self-care schedule.

Much love! x
