The Importance Of A Good Night’s Sleep

The importance of a good night’s sleep is often overlooked, especially when we’re super busy and we feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day. Having a newborn in the home will do that to you! When things get a bit hectic, it’s important that we take a step back and remember just how important getting a good night’s sleep is, both for us and our little ones.

What is the importance of a good night’s sleep?

As adults, we know exactly how much better we feel after we get a good 8 hours worth of sleep. We can focus better, we don’t feel lethargic and we feel more motivated to get through the day. A good night’s sleep is super important for us but it’s even more important for our babies and toddlers.

Babies and children use their sleep time for important physical and mental developments and milestones. When your little one is sleeping, their body is working hard to help them grow physically and develop mentally and emotionally.

Children who get a good night’s sleep have been known to:

  • Have better focus
  • Make better positive decisions
  • Learn and remember new things
  • Have better social skills
  • Have better problem solving skills

How much sleep should you and your family be getting?

The amount of sleep needed per night varies according to age. Do keep in mind though that every little one is different so times may differ between children.

  • Under 1 year: 12-16 hours
  • 1-2 years old: 11-14 hours
  • 3-5 years old: 10-13 hours
